Approved Driving Instructor (or ADI) is a term for a driving instructor who teaches people to drive a car, the driving instructor has been tested and licensed by the Driving Standards Agency. It is a legal requirement that driving instructors of car driving in the UK must be qualified in order to charge for their services.

The UK has no law requiring the compulsory use of an ADI but research shows that nine out of ten learners who passed their theory and practical driving tests first time were taught by a driving instructor.

Once you have passed the ADI qualifying examinations you are given the title of Approved Driving Instructor, and you will be registered on the DSA’s/DVA’s list of Approved Driving Instructors. Then you will be licenced to give driving lessons.
