YOUNG DRIVERS ARE VUNERABLE ON OUR ROADS!

THE YOUNG DRIVER TOLL

We have learnt that in 2007, 138 teenage drivers (17, 18 and 19 year olds)

were killed on our roads. Some facts to assist us all in understanding

what this might mean:

In 2007

1086 drivers under 20 years of age were killed or seriously injured 821 were male
1426 drivers between 20 -24 were killed or seriously injured 1025 were male
Newly qualified drivers and their passengers account for one in five of all car deaths
A young driver is ten times more likely to be involved in a serious crash than an experienced driver
20% of new drivers have a crash within the first twelve months of passing their driving test.

DEATHS ON OUR ROADS

Following the announcement that road deaths in 2007 fell below the 3,000 forthe first time, the fear that this was perhaps a one off seems not to be the case as predictions are suggesting a figure around 2,600 for 2008. We awaitwith anticipation of the actual figures.

Young drivers and their parents need to make sure that they are properly trained to deal with the dangers on our roads today.
