DSA Observer on Driving Test

27th November 2009
Further to DSA discussions about observers on the driving  test and the DSA’s decision to adopt an approach based on education rather than legislation, the DSA have been looking at how they might progress this approach sooner than October 2010.
The DSA can confirm that this new approach for the driving test will now be fully adopted by 6 April 2010, when the wording of the DT1 will be changed. Driving examiners will ask all candidates if they would like their ADI (driving instructor), or another observer, such as a parent, guardian, or friend, preferably the person who has taught the candidate to drive to sit in on their driving test. The driving examiner will then ask the candidate if they would like their instructor to be present for the test result and de-brief. This approach will allow candidates to take advantage of all the opportunities available to support their ongoing learning and development, but will leave the final decision with them.
