DSA Update – Independent Driving Research
The Driving Standards Agency have published two research reports about independent driving which will be included in practical driving tests from October 2010.
Newly-qualified drivers identify one of the biggest challenges they face is driving without the support of their instructor and the reports indicate that independent driving should help bridge that gap.
Over 450 learner drivers, instructors and examiners took part in the research. While the learner drivers found the tasks a challenge to complete they believed they were relevant to ‘real’ driving. Furthermore they coped well on the drives.
The reports, ‘From taking directions to taking control’ and ‘On the road to Independence’ can be found at www.dsa.gov.uk. A film clip that shows feedback from learner drivers who took part in the research, as well as examiners and instructors is available at www.youtube.com/dsagov.
