Drivers risk £1000 fine for expired licences

More than 1.6 million drivers in the UK are at risk of a £1000 fine because their photo card licence has expired. The fact came to light following a Freedom of Information request by Sainsbury’s car insurance and it is thought that by the end of this year some 3 million licences will require renewing.
Unlike the old paper licences, photo-card licences need replacing every 10 years and it is now longer than that since they were first introduced in 1998. Having an expired photograph on your driving licence is within itself an offence, whether or not you are an active driver and carries a fine of up to £1000.
Acclaim’s Director of Training, Richard Barton, said, “We would encourage all drivers, whether active or not, to check their driving licence, particularly if they do have a photo card licence and ensure that it is valid”.
