acclaim backs Minister’s call for motorway training

Leicester based driving school, acclaim, has endorsed recent comments by the Transport Minister, Mike Penning¹, to allow learner drivers to be allowed onto motorways. Mr Penning has suggested that learners that are of a high enough standard should be allowed onto a motorway, so long as they are accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor and in a dual-controlled vehicle.

acclaim’s Director of Operations, Roger Ison, told Talk Sport radio that it was time that motorway driving was incorporated into the driving curriculum. “It no longer makes sense that a driver can pass the test one day and be free to go onto a motorway the following day, without any previous experience.”

Acknowledging that government ministers had previously used the argument that some intercity areas may not be accessible to driving test candidates, Ison continued “it is a very different driving experience and it is essential that candidates have some experience before being allowed on their own.”

acclaim said after the interview that there are other ways to accommodate motorway driving by freeing up some of the time used for manoeuvres. Currently most test routes are determined by where the manoeuvres can be undertaken; meaning that much time is spent in urban areas. If driving instructors were allowed to ‘sign-off’ the manoeuvres using a log book system then test routes could be determined by the location of motorways and dual carriageways. Currently we strongly recommend that all our successful pupils take a motorway driving lesson by itself or part of the Pass Plus driving programme. All our Instructors are trained to ensure that pupils respect and understand motorway driving. If you are interested in a motorway driving lesson call acclaim on 0800 838 440.
