Mobiles and Petrol Stations – Reasons not to use your mobile when filling up
The Shell Oil Company has recently issued a warning after three separate incidents involving mobile phones and consumers refuelling their car.
In the first case, fire destroyed a car and the petrol pump after the customer left their mobile phone on the boot lid of the car during refuelling and it rang. In the second case an individual suffered severe burns when they answered it and in the third case injury was done when a mobile phone rang in someone’s pocket. In all three cases, it was fumes that ignited the mobile phone.
Mobile phones can easily ignite fuel or fumes, simply by ringing or lighting up. Mobile telephones should not under any circumstances be used in filling stations, or when fuelling lawn mowers, boats or any other fuel consumer. In fact mobile phones should be switched off around any flammable substances.
Shell has outlined four safety rules for refuelling:
- Turn of the vehicle engine
- Do not smoke
- Do not use your mobile telephone
- Do not re-enter your vehicle during refuelling.
Training Director, Richard Barton, said, “A lot of motorists don’t understand the dangers of using mobile phones close to fuel pumps. These are not rules imposed by garages for petty reasons; they are there to protect customers and colleagues that work there. Our Instructors teach Lifetime driving so we ensure that all our pupils know the importance of respecting such rules.”
