Speed limit set to increase.
Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, has announced plans to increase the national speed limit to 80mph in 2013, following a consultation on the issue. It is believed that the initiative is part of an offensive to show that the coalition government is not ant-motorist.
Commenting on the proposed change, Mr Hammond said, "Now it is time to put Britain back in the fast lane of global economies and look again at the motorway speed limit which is nearly 50 years old, and out of date thanks to huge advances in safety and motoring technology. Increasing the motorway speed limit to 80mph would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times. So we will consult later this year on raising the limit to get Britain moving."
Acclaim’s Director of Training, Richard Barton, added, “We support this imitative by the government as a revision to the current speed limit is long overdue. Cars are considerably safer than they were fifty years ago, but moreover, they are capable of higher speeds and keeping the current level makes no sense.”
Whilst others have criticised the ecological impact, Mr Hammond is known to be a great believer in motorists making a choice, having previously commented that if drivers wanted to save fuel they would naturally drive more slowly.
