If you are travelling abroad this year and plan to hire a car, are you aware of the changes in your driving licences and how you should comply with these changes? If so you need to check out the new driving licence changes before you go. You could be left stranded at airports due to a shake-up in the driving licence system, many experts have warned.

The DVLA is scrapping paper driving licences from June 8 this year and much of the information - such as fines and penalty points - will be stored online instead.

This change could have a huge impact on people wanting to hire cars abroad, particularly if you are not aware or prepared for the changes.

As well as the plastic photo licence card motorist will now need to obtain a special online code from the DVLA website before they travel. You will need to key in your driving licence details and your  national insurance number to get the code, which only lasts 72 hours.

This means that you may need to log in again if you are driving later in your holiday.

Car hire firms can call a special hotline telephone number to check driving licence details and endorsements - but experts have warned that the new system will cause confusion and delays.

A lot of people are still unaware of the new rule changes. If you don’t have a paper licence or don’t take it with you due to the new rules then you  may find yourself unable to hire a car as some companies may still insist on paper parts to check the driver isn’t banned.

Families could easily find themselves stranded at airports in the middle of nowhere after being refused a hire car. It’s a very worrying situation.

There is a helpline for the car  hire companies to call to get a code and check the drivers details but this has restricted hours of service and may be busy so hire companies may not be able to confirm readily. This may lead to refusal or big queues while they are waiting on the phone.

So if you are planning to travel abroad this summer and want to hire a car, make certain that you are aware of these changes in driving licences and travel properly prepared!
