Some confusion may arise over the official age that you can apply for a provisional licence. You can apply for your provisional license when you are 15 years and nine months old, but this is put in place so that you can learn to drive a moped when you turn 16. It does not mean that you can start learning to drive a car as soon as you receive it.
You can drive a car when you are 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of personal independence payment (PIP).
You must have a provisional licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland when you’re learning to drive, and remember you must be supervised when you’re learning to drive a car. This can be a driving instructor or someone who meets the rules.
