Driving Test Changes

From Monday the 4th December 2017, the Driving Test will change in England, Scotland and Wales, but will remain unchanged in Northern Ireland.  These changes will initially apply to car driving tests.

4 Driving Test Changes

Independent Driving - This part of the driving test usually lasts about 10 minutes, this will increase to around 20 minutes.

Follow Directions From A Sat Nav - Most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a pre-set Sat Nav, that the examiner has provided.  You cannot use your own Sat Nav during your driving test.

One in five driving test candidates will not use a Sat Nav, during their driving test, they will need to follow traffic signs instead.

Change To Reversing Manoeuvres

The "reverse around a corner" and "turn in the road" manoeuvres will no longer form part of the driving test.

The examiner will ask the candidate to carry out 1 of 3 possible manoeuvres.

1}  Parallel park at the side of the road

2)   Park In A Bay - either driving into the bay and reversing out, or reversing into the bay and driving out.

3)  Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, then reversing for 2 car lengths and then   re-join the traffic.

"Show Me, Tell Me" Questions

You will in the new driving test be asked 2 safety questions

"Tell Me" -  Question, you will be asked to carry out a safety task, at the start of your driving test, before you start driving.

"Show Me" - Question, you will be asked to show the examiner how to carry out a safety task while you are driving. e.g. how to turn on the windscreen wipers to wash the windscreen.
