Teenagers in Dagenham got some practical lessons in safer driving at their school. Year 12 pupils at Sydney Russell School tried their hand at off-road driving – and spotting the risks when using public roads – as part of the new right Start scheme offered by acclaim driving school.

Training

The young people watched a training video about the dangers of driving, followed by a 10-question quiz. Pupils showing they had understood the video’s message then tried their hand at some practical skills, getting behind the wheel of a dual-control car in the school’s playground.

Gary Chamberlain, acclaim’s area manager, and school community coordinator Steve Johnson organised the event, the first in a series across east London.

“I was impressed with how many of the students got 10 out of 10 on the quiz,” Gary said.

“They weren’t easy questions and it did show that we managed to convey some important messages to them.”

Experience

Steve added: “It’s great to get those messages across, while at the sametime giving some of our students the opportunity to experience”
